Heating and Cooling with Heat Pumps
Heat pumps can offer an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners. Heat pumps use electricity to move heat from a cool space to a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer, like how a refrigerator operates.
Sure, heat pumps sometimes get a bad rap. Most people think that the outdoor unit will turn into a block of ice during the dead of winter. However, this is not true. There is very low humidity during the winter, so there will be little condensation on the outdoor unit. But, as soon as any ice starts to affect the unit, it will go into defrost mode. This turns the heat pump into air conditioning mode, and turns on the electric heat. This only lasts for a couple of minutes, and then it goes back into heating mode, and turns off the electric heat. This type of system is great if you don’t have access to, or want to stay away from fossil fuels and natural gas. And it is efficient. Rheem’s Prestige Series RP20 has a SEER rating of 20 and a HSPF of 13.
